Gris Grimly Appreciation Post

Best known for his macabre art, he is renowned for his parodies of Grimm's Fairytales, Alice in Wonderland, and The Wizard of Oz. He was born in 1975 in a small Nebraska farming community. He began art at an early age and his talent was fostered by his parents' encouragement. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Concordia and moved to LA shortly after to work as an illustrator. He worked with Bob Self, owner of the company Baby Tattoo Books, to self publish several illustrated books simplifying classical novels and stories such as Edgar Allen Poe's Tales of Mystery and Madness, Sleepy Hollow, and Frankenstein, all of which have since been translated into multiple languages and implemented into school systems worldwide. These works launched his career. He has since worked with a variety of big names including but not limited to Simon and Schuster, Chronicle, Random House, Scholastic, Neil Gaiman, HarperCollins, Ray Bradbury, Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Washington Irving, Disney, Jon Scieszka, Dreamworks, and the Jim Henson Company.

"The Magician," 2013, Watercolour and Ink

I think this piece really shows of Grimly's style. I really appreciate his sharp lines and how he shades with the watercolours. His use of lighting is exemplary.

"Lifted by the Dark," 2016, Watercolour and Ink

I love the subject matter of this piece. The colour palette and simple design really adds to the whimsy feel.

Here is the front cover of one of Grimly's books, Gris Grimly's Tales from the Brother's Grimm. His art style and colour palette go very well with the subject matter.
